Kungfuand
Strength in the shadows

Low-key studio photography for a Shanghai kung fu and Muay Thai centre: aspirational portraits of its masters at full power.

Project overview

Kungfuand is a Shanghai martial arts centre teaching kung fu and Thai boxing. For its marketing material it wanted images of its masters that would make people want to train: strong, disciplined and a little heroic.

Studio White planned and shot the campaign in our Shanghai studio. We worked with the centre’s shifu and Muay Thai kru to choose the techniques that show each style best, from guard stances and knee strikes to spinning kicks and acrobatic jumps, then lit and photographed every move at its peak.

The look is deliberately cinematic: a black backdrop, hard side light and deep shadows that sculpt muscle and fabric, with flash freezing the motion so that every fold of cloth and every tensed muscle stays sharp.

Choosing techniques with the masters and shaping each move so it reads clearly in a single frame.

03

Lighting & capture

Low-key studio lighting and fast flash to freeze kicks, strikes and jumps at their peak.

04

Post-production

Grading and retouching for deep blacks, clean highlights and a consistent set.

Every move at its peak

Martial arts photography lives or dies on timing. A kick caught a fraction early looks weak; a fraction late, it looks posed. We worked move by move, repeating each technique until the frame caught it at full extension.

Stillness matters as much as speed. Calm stances and focused expressions show the control behind the power, and that discipline is what the centre teaches.

Sculpted by light

Hard light from the side, almost nothing from the front: the low-key set-up turns muscle into sculpture and lets the background fall away to black. Some frames were finished in black and white to push the drama further, giving the centre images that feel closer to film posters than gym adverts.

Images that make you want to train

The shoot gave Kungfuand a library of striking, consistent images for its marketing, in print and online, showing its masters as they are in the training hall: powerful, precise and composed. It’s how we approach sports and fitness photography: plan the action, control the light and capture the moment.

Power in motion

Kicks, strikes and jumps, each frozen at the moment of greatest power.

Technique

Precision, frame by frame

In a traditional uniform the fabric tells the story: sleeves snapping straight, the belt in motion. We lit the white cloth so it glows against the dark, while the master’s face stays calm and in control.
